Everyone knows Hong Kong is a tiny piece of land on earth with a large part being the very urban metropolis built by cement. It is hard to imagine that we possess currently 51 recognized species of native snakes dwelling in here, including 21 species of venomous snakes (6 of them being sea snakes), while others are non-venomous. A small grumpy snake possesses perfect camouflage in Hong Kong trees, the Mock viper (Psammodynastes pulverulentus) is one of the best ambush predators of Hong Kong. Mock viper is also known as Flase viper, Violet-sanded snake, Leopard snake. In chinese it is called 紫沙蛇 in Hong Kong and China, and 茶斑蛇 in Taiwan. This species is a small, rough-looking snake belonged to the family Colubridae that reaches 45-65 cm when fully-grown. (more...)
